Provisional programme

The tripartite meeting on micro-finance.
Lyon (France): 9-10 November 1998
Rest

The United Nations Conference
on Trade and Development

invites

  • Reviewing together challenges and prospects of the micro-finance industry.

  • Assessing the results of ongoing public-private partnerships in the micro-finance market.

  • Evaluating needs and exploring opportunities for new partnerships.
At the crossroads of profit and development
Micro-finance, one of the most fascinating social and economic phenomena of this age, combines a commercial approach with the development of the poorest. This duality makes it an ideal field for launching new forms of strategic alliances between Governments and the private sector.

Public-private partnerships as the way forward
A number of partnerships among Governments, micro-finance institutions and leading mainstream financial institutions are already under way. The tripartite meeting will thus be the cornerstone of an already ongoing process. It will also be a starting point for new partnerships: UNCTAD has already begun working with existing partners and will put forward concrete proposals for new partnerships which will be concluded during the meeting.

A collaborative process
As this is a market in the making, we invite banks, asset management firms, insurance companies, investors, auditing firms and rating agencies, as well as micro-finance institutions and Governments interested in creating new partnerships, to approach us before the meeting.
